CREVE COEUR ~ Evelyn Marie Lee, 90, of Creve Coeur, passed away at 10:08 p.m. Thursday, August 17, 2017 at her home.

She was born February 11, 1927 in East Peoria to James and Bernice (Muir) Strickland.  Evelyn married Howard Russell Lee, Sr. on September 13, 1946 in Peoria.  He died August 15, 2013.  She was also preceded in death by her parents, two grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Surviving are her seven children, April (Boyd) Gordley of Glasford, Howard Lee Jr. and Bruce (Yvonne) Lee, both of East Peoria, Allen (Amy) Lee of Creve Coeur, Penny Knebel of East Peoria, Linda Tucker of Bradford, and Sandra Lee of Princeville; twenty-four grandchildren; forty-one great-grandchildren (plus 2 awaited births); one great-great-granddaughter; one brother, James (Jan) Strickland of Woodhull; two sisters, Ruth Evelsizer of St. Louis, Missouri and Shirley Mansfield of East Peoria; and sister-in-law, Mary (Tom) Hoey of East Peoria. 

Evelyn survived the 1927 flood in the East Peoria bottoms.  She was a 1946 graduate of East Peoria Community High School.

In earlier years, Evelyn had worked as a bank teller, waitress at Bishop’s Buffet, Montgomery Wards, and last at Foster & Gallagher.

A homemaker, she enjoyed painting, cross stitching, going out to eat, playing scrabble, cards (pinochle), avid reader, and the simple things in life, especially family.  Evelyn enjoyed vacations with her children and later her grandchildren.  She looked forward to getting her hair done at Cindy’s weekly. 

She was a member and past officer of the Creve Coeur American Legion Post #1234 Ladies Auxiliary.  She enjoyed helping in the kitchen, bingo, dances, and other post activities. 

Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 25, 2017 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Creve Coeur.  Pastor Keith Thibo will officiate.  Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.  Private burial will be in Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria.
