PEKIN ~ Etta Irene Martis, 90 of Pekin, passed away at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, July 7, 2019 at OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria.

Born March 8, 1929 in Peoria to Samuel Benjamin and Etta Irene (Rogers) Funk, she married Joseph Carl Martis on July 28, 1948 in Racine, Wisconsin.  He died April 26, 2002 in Pekin.  She also was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Steven Lee Martis and Jeffrey Loren Martis; two brothers, Samuel Funk and Fred Funk and five sisters, Ruth Boyd, Helen Adkins, Jannett Farkas, Jeanette Street and Dorothy Rogers.

Surviving are two sons, Dr. Richard J. Martis of Pekin and Scott A. Martis of Mackinaw; eleven grandchildren, Steven Martis, Megan (Josh) Wagner, Corey (Jessica) Martis, Rebecca Martis, Collin Martis, Joseph (Caitlin) Martis, Jarrod (Hillary) Martis, Justin Martis, Melissa Hicks, Emily (Nathan) Ehlers and Angela (Jeremiah) Yarbough; six great-grandchildren; one brother, James Funk of St. Petersburg, Florida and one sister, Sophie (Gerald) Agatucci of Peoria.  She also leaves one sister-in-law, Peggy Carter of Davison, Michigan and two brothers-in-law, Gerald (Verline) Martis of Sebring, Florida and Christopher (Christie) Martis of Pekin.

Etta raised her family and then went to work for the City of Pekin, starting as a crossing guard.  She then worked for the Pekin Police Department as a meter maid, as a longtime records clerk and last as the front desk clerk, until retiring on her 80th birthday in 2009.

Her family was her top priority in life, especially her grandchildren.  She also enjoyed traveling, gardening, reading and collecting dolls.

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Pekin.

Her memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 11, 2019 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin.  Pastor Eric N. Swanson will officiate.  Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.  Inurnment will follow the service in Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin.
