CREVE COEUR ~ Ernest Howard Schoenman, 89, of Washington, formerly of Creve Coeur, passed away at 4:19 a.m. Monday, September 26, 2016 at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Born February 21, 1927 in Grundy County, Tennessee to Elbert and Minnie (Tate) Schoenman, he married Rachel Lucille Cole on July 6, 1952 in Ramsey.  She died June 8, 1989 in Peoria.  He was also preceded in death by his parents; one infant son, Christopher Schoenman; three brothers, Charles Schoenman, Raymond Schoenman, and Glenn Schoenman; and one sister, Alvina Luttrel.

Surviving are four sons, Howard (Margaret) Schoenman, Roger Schoenman, and Douglas (Trish) Schoenman, all of Creve Coeur, and Dennis (Kathy) Schoenman of Washington; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Carl (Shirley) Schoenman of Winchester, Tennessee; and one sister, Edna Kilgore of Monteagle, Tennessee.

He was a United States Army veteran of World War II.

Ernest was employed at Caterpillar, Inc. for 30 years, retiring in 1981 as a machine repairman at Building HH in East Peoria.

He was a faithful member of New Life Christian Fellowship in North Pekin.

Ernest was an avid gardener.  He was so passionate about his gardening that he raised his plants from seedlings in his greenhouse.  Ernest also enjoyed woodworking and was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinal’s.

His funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, September 29, 2016 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Creve Coeur. Pastor Eugene Hooker and Pastor Chuck Wilcox will officiate.  Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.  Burial will be at Fondulac Cemetery in East Peoria.
